The fifth Thomas Mann Lecture was broadcast live from Zurich and Harvard on 16 November 2021. More than 90 people connected from all over the world. They were able to follow the lecture, which was broadcast in two languages for the first time, in German or with simultaneous interpretation in English, and gained profound insights into Thomas Mann’s literary work.
Reflection
The sociopolitical relevance of Thomas Mann’s literature is illustrated by Professor Judith Ryan from Harvard University in her lecture “Thomas Mann and crowd psychology”. In it, she points to the special relevance and urgency for our times as well, citing as examples the complete works of the literary figure of the century. For example, she looks at Thomas Mann’s political novella Mario and the Magician from 1930, but also surprises with references to crowd psychology in the novels Buddenbrooks (1901) and Confessions of Felix Krull (1954).
