Open access: the new story on Explora
It’s the year 2024: a scientist in Sudan, a family member of a patient with a rare disease in the USA, a farmer in China – they are all able to access the latest findings from academia at any time, without restriction and free of charge. As a result, they can develop new energy supply options for their community, prepare for visits to the doctor or follow the latest research on varieties and seeds.
A pipe dream or is free access to academic literature not long overdue?
The latest story on Explora recounts the early days of academic journals, the monopolisation of the market and the birth of the open access movement – set in motion by the World Wide Web. ETH Library is also committed to open access and is on hand to offer advice to members of ETH Zurich, support them with publishing research results and articles in the Research Collection, and assume certain publishing costs (APCs).
