MySQL databases
MySQL is one of the world's most popular relational database systems. It is available for many different operating systems as an open source software and constitutes the data layer for web applications like WordPress, Typo3 and many other web content management systems (WCMS). MySQL stands out through its performance, dependability and ease of use.
IT Services offer the MySQL database service in two different variations. Both offerings are free of charge.
MySQL unmanaged database for ETH staff and students
Personal MySQL database with a maximum size of 50 MB and one database administrator account (service category white, 5*7h best effort).
This offer does not include any other services like monitoring, support, backup, restore, etc. The customer is solely responsible for the database administration and backup.
ETH staff and students can order such a personal “unmanaged database” using the IT Shop (ITSM)
MySQL managed database for ETH organisational units
Centrally monitored MySQL database with a maximum size of 100 MB and one database administrator account (service category blue, 7*16h).
The database is setup redundantly (master/slave) and monitored by IT Services. IT Services operate the database for the customer (monitoring, support, backup, restore, etc.). If the master server goes down, the database (and the application connecting to it) comes back online after only a short interruption (while the URL is manually switched to the slave server). This service requires an ETH subdomain (www.XYZ.ethz.ch) for the database server.
ETH organisational units can order a “managed database” using the protected pageMySQL database hosting application formlock.
