Conflict in the workplace
Tensions and unresolved conflicts can have a very damaging effect. We encourage you to actively work towards resolving any conflict at an early stage. We are here to support you throughout the process.
Whenever possible, ask the individual or team with whom you have a conflict to meet. Some conflicts are based on misunderstandings that can easily be cleared up in a conversation.
Suggestions for a solution-oriented conversation
- Resolving conflict effectively requires clear and respectful communication that works towards finding a solution.
- Think about what is important to you and what you want to achieve prior to the conversation.
- Enter the conversation with a positive and open attitude.
- Listen to the other person attentively and state your own opinion objectively.
- Express yourself in the first person rather than the second – “I”, not “you”.
- Consider the points on which you would be willing to compromise.
- Stay fair and respectful. Ask the other party to do the same, if necessary. Tips on respectful interaction can be found in the Respect programme.
If a conflict has already escalated, it is best to take a step back. Seek help. The same applies if a discussion with the other party is not possible or has not yet led to a solution.
What options do you have?
- Inform your superior about the conflict (if this is possible in the situation).
- Contact your HR Partner.
- Make use of the coaching services offered by the Respect Office.
- Let the Clarification Office support you in systematically clarifying the conflict with all parties involved.

Our team at the ETH Zurich Clarification Office offers support in resolving conflicts with the involved parties.
Depending on your case and your concerns, we decide on the appropriate approach, which we then coordinate and facilitate with all parties involved. There are various options, ranging from moderation or mediation to coaching and measures to clarify the situation within the team.
Prerequisites
- You are an employee of ETH Zurich.
- You are willing to collaborate constructively in the systematic proceedings.

Conflict does not always need to be negative. If other points of view can be met with openness and respect, and with a will to find a common solution, conflict can often lead to positive change. In any case, constructive management of conflict makes a decisive contribution to a harmonious atmosphere in the workplace, which in turn promotes not only a sense of well-being but also creative collaboration and innovative solutions.
