The Hans Oeschger Medal was established in recognition of the scientific achievement of Hans Oeschger, who was a Swiss pioneer of ice core research. It is awarded to scientists for their outstanding achievements in ice research and/or short-term climatic changes.

Overall, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named the 51 recipients of next year’s Union Medals and Awards. They will be celebrated during the EGU General Assembly 2021, which will be held from 25–30 April.

The European Geosciences Union (external pageEGU) is Europe’s premier geosciences union, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences for the benefit of humanity. It was established in September 2002 as a merger of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and the European Union of Geosciences (EUG), and has headquarters in Munich, Germany.
