Releasing global forests from human management: How much more carbon could be stored?
Several strategies to remove CO2 from the atmosphere have been put forward to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. One such strategy is to reduce the intensity of forest management in order to increase the accumulation of carbon in forests. However, a new study published lead by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission and ETH Zürich shows that, even if forest management were removed altogether, the mitigation potential of this strategy is limited.
